The mission of Riviera United Methodist Church is to be Christ's outreaching love for the world: feeding the hungry; nourishing the soul; nurturing families; celebrating the grace of God through worship music and the arts. We believe that the love of God in Jesus Christ affirms the dignity, and sacred worth of each person as created in the image of God, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, economic or marital status, mental or physical ability, or life experience. There is nothing in life or in death or in all creation that can separate us from the love of God, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

The last Sunday before Ash Wednesday is traditionally designated for celebrating the transfiguration of Jesus (Mark 9:2-9). It is the fourth celebration (after Christmas, Epiphany, and Jesus’ Baptism) that affirms the identity of Christ as not only fully human, but also fully God with us. These celebrations strengthen and prepare us for the journey of following Jesus to the cross (from Ash Wednesday through Lent to Holy Week) as we discover more deeply what this means. The image of glory and light celebrated in this text also points forward to God’s ultimate victory over death celebrated at Easter. (Adapted from The Worship Sourcebook)
